Hitching a ride on the dragon and phoenix – 扳龙附凤

wp-1453739908170.png

附凤
[鳳]
bān (pān) lóng fù fèng
ban1 (pan1) long2 fu4 feng4
hitching a ride to the sky on the dragon and phoenix
currying favor with the rich and powerful in the hope of advancement
≅ hitching one’s wagon to a star

I’ve found two variants:
附凤
[鳳] (bān lóng fù fèng)
附凤 [攀] (pān lóng fù fèng)

But “” is also a variant form of “攀”, so I’m not quite sure about the pronunciation.

攀附 / pānfù / social climbing

  1. You could treat 扳 like any other 破音字, which is a Chinese character that has two or more different pronunciations and the associated meanings. Therefore, I would pronounce 扳龍附鳳 exactly the same way as 攀龍附鳳 because, in this context, one is “reaching up” rather than “moving or turning something”.
